Why clear plastic?

Why clear plastic?

Hi Doug,

I have three raised beds I use for growing vegetables and have a heck of a time keeping them weed-free during off season. Why do you suggest clear plastic for weed control/soil heating/insect egg burning, etc.? Would the soil heat faster and solve more problems using heavy duty contractor black trash bags weighted down by rocks or bricks, or am I missing the point here?

If clear is the answer, how thick a gauge and how do you keep it in place? I'm guessing in the midwest USA it would be something found at one of the big hardware stores.

Thanks for all the wonderful things you do for all of who play in the dirt each year. Greetings to your Princess and tell her the only tomato I'm starting from seed this year is Mayo's Delight. It will be the first year I try it as the description sounds fabulous.

Doug says - clear plastic acts as a mini-greenhouse, allowing uv-rays through to the soil to heat it up. Black plastic doesn't allow this but heats up and traps heat mechanically. If you really want to heat up the soil - or sterilize it - then you leave the clear plastic on all summer.

But you only use clear plastic to heat up the soil - never as a mulch or with plants growing through it. The clear stuff will kill plant roots quite nicely (I use it to kill grass in new beds).

The black stuff makes a decent growing mulch and prevents weeds from germinating without too much heat buildup in the soil. But it's not the best for spring soil heating or soil sterilization.

I use whatever is cheapest - and I weight down the edges with 2x4 and cement blocks or whatever else I have lying around - just so the wind doesn't whip it up and off.

Hope that helps.

Cover crop is the way to go, plus it keeps soil from washing away in the winter rains. I've started using my own seeds for cover crop, like peas, beans, herbs, flowers, even dandelion as their tap roots hold the soil well and break it up. Just dig them in before they flower. This way I don't have to pay for cover crop.

How to keep your plastic down.
by: GardenRedHead

I was reading this article, and I know he said he used anything < 2x4's > to keep the plastic down, but I wanted you to know about a few things I use that are handy. First I like to go down to wal-mart and in the gardening center they sell garden staples 40 per box, for around $4.00 a box. I use them for all kinds of things even plastic..lol. Then theres my old tryed and true, 6 or 8 penny nail through the center of a small plastic bowl lid. Their Perfect for large or small areas. Hope this helps.

glass vs plastic
by: Doug

Ah re glass - that's true re pass-through rates of UV but I'd *never* suggest laying panes of glass on the garden to warm up the soil. Risk of breakage is far too great, and labour to do this is too high in garden (not to mention cost).

Plastic does helt the heat in, but it Block 90 to 99% of the UV light spectrum, Glass will let about 65% of UV light through it, s0 it.s much better

cover crop

id recomend using a cover crop in the off season it helps suppress the weeds plus ads nutrients to the soil. planting bell beans vetch and oat straw in the fall for cover crop then tilling that in b4 planting your summer crop or just cut it down and use the green matter 4 mulch. the roots fix nitrogen into the soil that your summer crops can feed off of check to c witch cover crops work best 4 your climate and when to plant, there are some available 4 all times of year
