What vegetables to plant together

I have four 4x7 raised garden boxes/beds. I was wondering which vegetable to plant together. The four are fenced in by wooden lattice. Two of the beds are right up againts the lattice on two sides. The other two beds are only touching the lattice on one side (the length). There is enough room between the boxes to walk (down the middle, between the set of two boxes).
What vegetables would well work well together in each bed? Would it be better to plant in short rows across the width or long rows across the length?
Doug says - Wow! This is a massive question and I can't do justice here. Except for the one about length or width in planting. For my money, it's easier to plant across narrow beds than along them.
What plants to grow together? This really has to start with what plants do you like to eat? There's no sense me telling you that chard goes well with tomatoes if you can't stand chard. :-) (not saying that chard does go well - just an example).
So. Where to take this?
The short answer is that every vegetable is listed here for how to grow instructions. And, there are articles on companion planting there as well.
Basic vegetable garden design is here.
And there's an ebook on how to get even more vegetables out of small spaces here and how to combine the plants you want to grow.
So all the info you're looking for is here, but it starts with understanding which plants you want to grow and how to grow them as individuals.
