Weeding Snow On The Mountain

A question about: Weeding SnowOnTheMountain.

I truly appreciate your expertise and willingness to share it with us.

I tried a search for my issue and couldn’t find an answer so I apologize if this has been answered previously.

My backdoor neighbor has planted Snow On the Mountain that prefers to grow into my yard as this is where we have cedar chips placed for our playset. Any advice on how to stop the spread?

Thanks so much for your time.

Heidi

Doug Says

That snow-on-the-mountain or Aegopodium (I note Snow on the Mountain also refers to an annual plant and several perennial plants - so take your pick on this one) is a viscious spreading weed.

Start digging.

You could invest in a solid steel foundation around your entire yard. ;-)

Chemicals

Chemical folks spray with Roundup without digging the plant first to kill the entire plant but understand this plant will require several applications 3 weeks apart of a mix on the high end of the licensed mixes. (a greater concentration of the active ingredient glyphosate).

Organic

Organic sprays such as acetic acid are pretty much ineffective against this situation. The spray will "burn" the top growth to be sure but because much of the energy for the plant's growth is coming from the neighbor's patch, the underground shoots (not touched by the contact spray) will simply continue to produce new shoots ad infinitum.

It is necessary to control the underground shoots to gain the upper hand with any of these spreading plants.

As long as this horticulturally inept neighbor grows this plant next to your garden, you're going to have to control the plant. Other than death, there is no way to stop this thug.

Personally, I wouldn't plant anything of value in that area and would watch it every spring - digging out the invaders. I'd also complain to my neighbor and invite them to come and control their plant from my yard. If you allow this plant a foothold in your garden, you'll have it too.

Holds True For All Weeds

I note this advice holds true for just about any spreading "weed" - from Aegopodium to Cerastium to Ajuga to ???

There's no accounting for some gardening behavior. ;-)
