Weed & Grass Killer

As you know I am only 3 years in to veggie gardening and of course everyone has advise to give me. One gardener told me to put Round-up in my garden spot this fall and it would kill all the grass and weeds for next year. Round-up is one of the most dangerous weed killers as far as I am concerned as I have seen it kill trees. All I would like to know is if this is a way to go for grass in your garden; weeds are no problem as I remove the weeds while cultivating the garden. Of course I bought Miricle-grow grass killer and feeder but it doesn't work if you have still got some grass in your garden so I didn't use it. Please let me know about the Round-up in the fall.

Doug does not use weed killer of any kind in his gardens. He uses a hoe, a strong arm, a weeder and a lot of mulch. But I don't recommend nor do I use chemicals.

On my lawns, I use organic systems - read here for details

Weed Killers

Thank you so very much. You both are right. I don't really have to even hoe my garden. I use the hoe to scrape the weeds between each row but the weeds are in the rows themselfs. I have been just leaving them until the plants get tall enough to pull only the grass. I have always believed in "if it is too good to believe then it is too good to be true". Thanks again.

amen doug... I have never used chemicals of any sort for weeds or pests... lots of mulch is the best for in season weed control...start most plants in a cold frame and transplant directly into your raised bed gardens. Beans, melons, and squash need to be seed sown directly in well amended dirt. I have to agree your elbows and a hoe will keep the weeds out of your veggies and the ones that do come up are a small gift...just bend over and pull them up...Pest control is mother nature given... if you use chemicals all your doing is disrupting the natural life cycle of everything for the rest of that growing season. More that not it will effect the next years pest V benificials cycle too.
I actually grow and can or freeze enough produce in 3 - 10 x 40 foot raised beds in the long growing season 7b for the winter ahead and fresh right off the vine all summer.
