How can I control foxtail, ect in Squash, Sweetcorn, Beets, Peas?

Doug says that mulch works really well as does a good hoe.

Or you can burn off the existing weeds with an organic spray.

try straw
by: Brenda

The year I topped my rows with straw was heaven. The only thing that came up between the rows was the seed sprouted from the straw which was very easily pulled up and added to the mulch. Another added benefit was the ease of walking in my garden after a rain. At the end of the season all was tilled in as my super clay garden needed definately needed it.

Printers ink

Fascinating...printer's ink made from soy? I was wondering about the ink, have read the recommendation to use newspaper and other junk mail as mulch................just fascinating, and reassuring.

weeds in garden

One thing I have done in the past in my vegetable garden is to spread single sheets of newspaper between the rows of veggies with a light covering of mulch. The newspaper prevents weeds and can be tilled in as it deteriorates. The printers ink is also beneficial to the soil but i don't know why.

***Doug says he has deleted the chemical recommendations in this post - this is an organic website and old-fashioned chemical use is not recommended in my garden*** On the other hand, laying newspapers between the rows and covering them so they don't blow away is effective and safe. And before you ask, printers-ink is soybean based now, not lead based.
