vegetable gardens and grubs

by Heather

can you treat organically for grubs and plant a veggie garden at the same time?

Doug says that if you want to use a predator nematode for grub control - then yes, you can use this on vegetable gardens as well as lawn care.

Nematodes for Grubs
by: Moni

Nematodes or another natural product for grub control called Milky spore are not fast control like chemical insecticides. These natural nematodes (tiny worms) or milky spore a fungus have to get inside of the grub and then grow thru out the insect to kill it. This takes time and it takes time to get enough live product (like anonymous said you need active nematodes or spores) to be available in the soil for the grub to come in contact with.

It is the case of supply and demand. You need a lot of grubs for the nematodes to find and multiply on for the nematode population to continue to be in your soil...in the same way you need enough grubs to be in the soil to provide food for the nematodes to stay. So if all the grubs are killed, then there is no more food for the nematodes.
It is a real balance of nature to allow some grubs to live so there is always a food source for the beneficial nematodes.

i tried nematodes for grubs on the lawn a couple of years with no luck. maybe it's too cold for them up here in CT, or maybe my supplier just didn't have good product.
