Using mulched leaves.

Would mulching all leaves and piling 4-5 inches on the garden each winter do about the same thing as compost?

Doug says that close counts :-) The piled up leaves will decompose into the same material as compost decomposes to (humus) and will have the same effect on the garden. So this is a great gardening practice.
