Rust on Roses

I just wanted to say how happy I am with your communications so far. Helpful, humorous and simple to follow! I do have one question though that I can't find an answer to. I have some pretty carefree and disease resistant roses (shrub, hybrid tees and explorer climbers). All have a rust spot problem that I haven't seen in previous years. my husband recently installed an inground sprinkler system which comes on during the early hours of the morning. Could this be the problem? If not, what could it be and what can I do about it. Many thanks in anticipation.,

Rose rust is a royal pain in the anatomy and luckily we don't see it all that frequently here in the North-east. It is mostly a problem out west or in similar climates

Yes, early morning and frequent watering is going to be a problem for many plants. It isn't the early mornings that create a problem but rather the urge to water frequently now that you have the system.

Rose rust is controlled (but not eliminated) by using an organic spray containing sulphur.

Sanitation is critical - removing infected leaves and ensuring that no plant debris is allowed to overwinter.
