Rose Care


Rose care is one of those debated topics that proceeds ad nauseum in rose growing circles. I’ve heard rosarians discuss the merits of one kind of spray over another and debate about which is best for over an hour. There was more heat than light in the conversation and I confess I got really tired of it all.


If you want to solve problems, I’ll give you my best experience at dealing with rose care topics. And this experience is from an environmentally based perspective. You simply do not need to use heavy duty chemicals on roses (nor should you if you want really, truly fine flower

To Begin


To begin with, growing great roses is a question of cultivation and growing techniques. If you start with a healthy plant AND keep it growing in a healthy way, then you won’t see half the problems that other rose growers see. It is only when you allow your plant to be under stress that you’ll start to see problems of major consequence. Yes, you’ll see problems when you grow organic roses as well but here’s how you deal with them.


Most Common Rose Problems



Black spot is the most common problem in the rose world but it shouldn't have to be. Here's some cultural tips along with home recipes for putting this problem to rest.

Powdery mildew disfigures roses and particularly the tender growing shoots and developing leaves. If your young leaves are twisted, you've likely got powdery mildew. Here's the organic controls that work as well as any chemical sprays.

Downy mildew is a common problem of areas with high humidity and cool temperatures. This is a tough one to control and the best advice seems to be to grow a healthy plant and practice good sanitation and plant spacing.


Grey mould or botrytis is a fungal infection attacking plants and can so some major damage unless controlled.
