Pruning peonies

by Mary Ann
(Wisconsin)

Do I cut down my peony bushes now or fall, or in spring? Also, some of the buds didn't open, can you tell me why? Busshes are 3 yrs. old, in good soil, and
get watered properly.

Thank you

Doug says you prune your peonies in the fall after they have been knocked back by frost. Cut them to the ground then. You cut the spent flower stalks off after the blossoms have died (cut the stalks as close to the ground as you can)

So it's a two-stage pruning. Cut flower stems back after flowering and the entire plant to ground in fall.

Buds don't open because of botrytis (usually).

old wive's tales and ants
by: Doug

Folks - it's a great old wives tale that peonies need ants to open their buds but it just isn't true. Sorry to burst that bubble but....

Buds not opening are more likely botrytis or other problem

Ants and Peonies

That is true. Ants 'eat' the waxy coating off the buds in order for them to open up.

Peonies

Doug, one year my peonies buds didn't open and an elderly lady ask me if I had any ants in my yard. I told her yes but killed them all. She smiled at me and told me that peonies wouldn't open without the ants. She stated that the ants were what opened the buds to flower. Is this a true fact? I leave the ants alone until the peonies quit budding. If this is just a old wives tell I sure would like to know as I would meal down every mound of ants if it is.
