pesticide free veg garden

I had a garden about 10 years ago and had so many bugs slugs and whiteflies I gave up. We had to put so much spray on the garden I was afraid to eat the veges. Please tell me how and what i can do to raise a pesticide free garden? such as what plants i can plant to keep bugs away and what to do about slugs snails white flies etc. Thanks for your help. Matt
