perrenials in containers

by Shirl
(Port Burwell Ont.)

We live about 1 mile from Lake erie and about an hour south of London Ont. If I plant perennial sweet peas in a container will it survive in it year around? I want to put them in a trellis box but dont want them to die outside over the winter.

Doug says he wouldn't bet the farm on it but stranger things have happened. :-) The seed for this plant is really inexpensive, so why don't you try it and see. :-) While you live in a warmer part of Canada, it's still Canada and you can pretty much bet the roots of most perennials will die when they get to -5F so if you get that low, the plants in containers (that get colder than the ground temperatures) are going to have a problem.

Let us know how the experiment works. :-)

don't know if this would work, but maybe try to sink one container in the ground so its completely covered. I think roots will freeze if left in pot sitting out of the ground.
or just replant every year, as doug says the seeds are cheap....
