summer wine nine bark shrub
by: Jan

I have read so many articles on this shrub ,I have about 15 of them as a border between me and the neighbour , they are now about 5 yrs old ,,My question is ,should I cut them back after they flower ? I have read so many different articles of when to cut them back , if they need cutting back at all ? I am worried that if I cut them back and they don't produce their beautiful flowers next year , I will be so disappointed as they are such a beautiful shrub ! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated .

Hi Christa .. it is funny you should speak about the powdery mildew showing up. I haven't had that problem with the Summer Wine .. BUT .. it has shown up in Coppertina and Center Glow .. It may be just a little set back for them since both were just planted this year. My Summer Wine is on it's third year now with great open air circulation.
I really am a fan of Ninebarks now.
We lived in Holland for four years and we always amazed by Dutch gardens no matter how small . Were you able to see any of the Netherlands while you were in Europe ?

I agree with you, Garden Joy, we purchased 2 plants
this year, which we planted in two containers. As we are getting the garden ready for winter, we found some (we hope!!) suitable locations, where they are now "resting" and hopefully display another year of beautiful foliage. The only thing I've noticed, when I got back from my trip to Europe, the tips of the branches showed some powdery mildew. By pruning back these tips, I hope, next year will be better.
