Newsprint --- ink toxic?

by T
(Savannah, GA)

I noticed use of newspaper and cardboards. I'm concerned that the inks and chemicals used in these products will leach out into the soil and into the plants. Would it be safe to consume?

Doug says do you want to eat the newsprint? :-) I wouldn't recommend it. But if you're asking about the inks - they're soybean based on modern printing presses. :-) for newsprint etc. No problem in garden as far as I know.

I sneeze and blow all day and the smell is everywhere. Do I need to stop reading the papers? The very
thought saddens me.

I Have A Reaction To Newsprint Ink
by: Jessica Dawson

I have had to stop reading newspapers: When I turn the pages and the newsprint rubs off onto my hands and fingers I have a negative reaction. My hands and fingers literally end up in intense deep pain.

So when my Mom mentioned I could use newspapers in the bottom of my planters to stop the dirt from draing out the holes, I opted not to. I read today, that you can put coffee filters over planter drain holes to prevent the dirt from draining with the water.

I took a journalism course and had to mostly read newspaper examples online: This, because of the bad reaction my hands have to newsprint ink.

Newspaper recycling for children's projects.
by: Helene Grantz

Children have been given an assignment to think of creative ways to make use of recyclables. I suggested newspapers as wrapping paper but wanted to give them a way to avoid newsprint on their hands. Is there something you can do to the paper before you use it to minimize ink on yours, or giftees hands when wrapping and unwrapping? Thanks.

newsprint is an excellent weed inhibitor for between vegetable planting rows or under gravel walks. it is biodegradable and has a high cellulose content.
