Miracle clematis fertilizer?

by Karen

this mixture contains beer, epsom salt, amonia and water. Ever heard of it? I currently have 35 clematis planted in my front yard and would love to give them an early season boost but I am a little more than apprehensive. What are your thoughts? Thanks for your time. karen

Doug says it sounds like the recipe from a certain gardening "guru" who scares almost everyone in the gardening world. Go with compost and fish emulsion - you'll be better off rather than trying to mix up some brew of homemade stuff.

Miracle clematis fertilizer?????

I'm not sure of any "Clematis Fertilizer", But I do know that Clematis don't like to have "Hot Feet". In other words, the ground where their roots are need to be shaded from the sun. I have several different varieties and I've, being a compulsive rock collector, have piled a large amount of interesting rocks all around the base of the plant where it comes out of the ground. The rocks keep the ground shaded from the sun at all times and keeps their little "feet" cool. Every year they come back and bloom profusely, more blooms than leaves seems like, and I've NEVER had a problem with them.
