legal issues and building codes for backyard ponds

are there legal issues and building codes you have to deal with when building a backyard pond? the internet is NO help when trying to search city codes and laws. i was wondering if there are any general things regarding legality i should know.

answers will be greatly appreciated.

Doug says there are a great many building codes you have to be concerned about and most of these are specific to the area you live in.

In general though, if the pond is over 18-inches deep, you're going to require a fence. Around the pond or pond area so children can't access it in any way. And you're going to have to have an electrician do the electrical hookups to ensure they're to code (and don't mess with electricity and water!)
