John Cabot Rose and Yellowing Leaves

by Robert
(Goose Bay, Labrador)

I have a John Cabot rose bush and the leaves are turning yellow. I use a 20-20-20 fertilizer and water 2 - 3 times a week. Is there anything I can do to keep the leaves from turning yellow?

Doug says you may have black spot so check for that. You may have shade ???? Yellowing leaves on the base of this plant aren't a problem - but fairly typical if the plant is stressed at all.

Watering 2-3 times a week is too much if you're giving this shrub (it's a big plant) a little bit each time. Much better to soak once deeply or maybe twice but 3 is too much.

Feeding - I don't know how often you're feeding but I'd lay off the triple-20. A shovel or three of compost in the spring, a bit of fish emulsion once a month during the summer and this shrubby rose will be fine.

But I'm betting on black spot.

You can cut it back - just not too far or you'll kill it (or weaken it severely) If they were mine, I wouldn't be cutting it back but I'd be feeding it properly and then engaging in a good organic fungicide spray program (lime sulphur etc) - Check the rose section for blackspot control sprays

yellowing leaves

I have a John Cabot rose bush which has been beautiful up until this year. The leaves are turning yellow and it looks awful. We have had so much rain and humidity could this be a factor.
I guess what I really wanted to know is if I can cut it back. I just don't want to look at it , to me its unsightly.
Thanks
