Is there a smell with this?

by Susan

If you compost , does it stink?

Every summer my neighbour does this compost thing, and wow does it ever sink, so much that I can not open my bedroom window. I have looked for laws on this but there is nothing saying what to do if this happens.

Can anyone give me an idea on how to stop this smell? They will not do a thing about it

Doug says that good composting does not stink. Now, if they're using fish wastes or real manure, then you're going to have an initial odour of those materials as they're moved and set into the bin. If the pile is large, you're going to get that initial smell but it shouldn't last or there is a problem with the process.

If the pile isn't built properly, then it will turn anaerobic and it might very well continue to stink.

And you can't control a smell if it's being made somewhere else.

Give your neighbor a book or printed out sheets on how to compost successfully. Try to help them make a great pile of compost. Aerobic compost is better than anaerobic "stuff" in the garden.
