Have you heard about impatient trees? I have what I have been told is a "impatient tree" and am looking for any information I can find.....plants get long and lanky in winter when inside house, but root easy and grow great outside...stalk about 1 to 1 1/4 inch diameter is the best i have got to.....

Thanks Dave

Doug says that what it looks like you have is a regular old-fashioned impatiens that has been pruned to a single stem. If you want it to get taller, you have to stake it and prune off all side branches until you get it to the height you want from a central leader. Once at the height you want, you simply cut the tip off and allow the top to bush out. You have a tree.

But there are big impatiens but no single stem "tree impatiens" without pruning and staking.

And yes, in the winter light levels go down so the plant will get long and lanky. You have to keep supplemental light on it if you want to keep the stem strong and growing.

We have in the wild here around Mt Hood something called Impatiens Balsamina. At the base they are around 1" plus. They get2'-3' tall. However, they spread their seeds up to 20', so quickly become a problem. The main stem is hexagonal.
