New beginning
by: Shirley

Since I could walk, fall down and smell the earth, I have been a gardener. I am 55 now and last fall suffered multiple strokes due to an infection. When I woke from open heart surgery, I had lost all memory of things I am most passionate about. Your newsletter is reconnecting me to what I love most; the earth, my garden and how to care for it once I am able. Many thanks, Shirley

Great way to learn how to garden.
by: Ana

Thank you so much for your newsletter and the site. I have learned a lot. I grew up knowing how to grow plants, veggies and fruit. One thing I can say is when you move to a different country like me and even a different state, planting is not the same. All things I knew seems to be gone and everything is new to me. Doug's website is helping me learn and use what I knew before,in to action. Motivation was the key, and I fell in love planting a garden again.

Many thanks for sharing your knowledge

I enjoy your site as gardening has always been my hobby.
by: Janet Cooley

I work endlessly to achieve a beautiful 4 season garden and many of your comments have helped me and I have also included them in my garden Journals—300 to 400 pages a year. Your comments on Downy mildew are already in the spring section of the 2011 journal and guidelines for when to plant seeds has also been included. I’ am ready to go and start at the beginning of Feb. Since I like the 4 season approach, I will try your computer planning this week. I have used 2 programs to design gardens & have failed with both. It’s not that I can’t use either program, it’s just that they don’t provide the product I want. I love your site, thanks Janet

I got my first newsletter and so much information!! I even referred back to it yesterday (Nov. 10th) for a bit more planting help. I am so happy to have advice that applies to my small part of the world. It's an amazing newsletter and I love it. In the Spring I will take pictures of a couple of plants that I have no idea what they are and ask for help. In the mean time I'm going to enjoy the information and plan a couple more gardens to start in the Spring.

I just signed up for this newsletter so my only comment is ALRIGHT!! I used to spend so much time in my yards and gardens and lost out on a lot of fun over the years. Now, when weather doesn't allow me to get OUT and get dirty...I can read about all the things I so fondly remember. Thanks!!

Black spot control on roses
by: Ruth

very interested in your method of controlling black spot on roses. We have just had an article printed in our best and latest gardening mag, which suggests baking soda etc., as you have done. I am about to ditch the tripherine, utter poison, and set up a good spraying programme using your ideas. I will keep you posted as to how it goes, we in Australia love our roses and any good news re black spot control is welcome and welll received, as we suffer here down under.

I don't remember how I stumbled upon your website, but it has been a terrific resource of all things gardening for me. I've been gardening for two years now and like to do a lot of research before committing to a design or plant. The newsletter is great at keeping me informed and I thank you for the countless hours you must log into making your website so informative.

Thanks for your help and inspiration!
by: Ursula, from Peru

I found your website looking for info on how to grow my hydrangeas better. I found so much more! I read a bit daily. I now know how to prune and why I am doing each type of pruning=). I am using much more compost than before and it is showing. I am planting my containers with more than one plant in each, achieving nicer results. I have moved plants around in my little garden and added more... it is looking great. Still, with your inspiration, I get new ideas every day, so more is coming to my garden soon, in the way of vines, containers and plants.
Thanks again, Ursula!

WOW
by: Anonymous

Thank you Doug, for such a tremendous gift!! This is the best gardening website I have seen. One of the neatest people I have ever met shared your website with me after helping me out at the local plant sale, and inviting me to join the horticultural society. I have been gardening off and on over the years as time has permitted, and I am so grateful for good information, having made and still making so many mistakes. I have only looked at a few articles so far, in particular the very comprehensive section about growing herbs, but your information and experience have been invaluable already. You cover many climate zones and soil types, too. Great Work! Thanks again!

Newsletter Feedback
by: Sue

I love the info, great photos and videos. Even though I'm a pretty experienced gardener it's always nice to see how to do things & learn more. The links provided are usefull too.
One comment: I garden in Zone 3 (Edmonton Alberta). I know some consider our location a gardening challenge. However, even though we get -35C in winter, we also get +30C in summer. Being northern, we also get very long days of sunlight which are really wonderful. I am always looking for websites & publications that address prairie zone 3 gardening so anything that you or fellow readers can offer would be much appreciated.

Happy newsletter
by: Stephanie

Just wanted to say that this year has been busy getting to the landscaping of my yard. We moved into our home 2 years ago and I started one rock garden but with work n family it kind was ingored as I only was able to plant annuals. Now this year I have been going perennial crazy and have planted alot just adding a fourth small flower bed on the edge of the vegatable garden because I ran out of space. That seems to be my problem now as I want more but no space. This weekly newsletter has been very informative as I am finally learning how to garden. I have been forwarding it my girlfriends who also injoy it very much. Thanks again.

Thank You Doug!
by: Gladys

As a beginner gardener and lots of trial and error I am enjoying your informative website. I only wish I had found your website a long time ago. I look forward to your next newsletter and would like to say thanks for your time and the concern you show towards your readers.

Great Newsletter
by: tracii

We recently bought a house and with that inherited a very British, crowded garden. Being fairly new to outdoor gardening (I have a green thumb with indoor gardening) I have found this newsletter and the web site extremely helpful. Maybe I will even be able to tell the flowering weeds from the actual flowers one day!! I hope!! I have to say I love the personal touch to the newsletters, so much better than the generic newsletters I get from other places. Thanx so much.

A Great Newsletter!
by: Jim in Michigan

I an an experienced gardener (over 30 years) and enjoy Doug Green's newsletter immensely. I can and do learn new things, not only from the experienced readers (and Doug too), but also from the novices. A day doesn't go by without a new bug or problem cropping up. It's good to know we can share and learn. I hope I can also contribute to the questions and the advice.

Wisteria and Ashoka
by: Divya

I am originally from India. I am currently in Maryland. So, I like to get information about gardening in a cooler climate.

I learned something new yesterday on Dough's newsletter. You can make your Wisteria to bloom if you ill treat it a bit. I had planted a Wisteria two years ago and was getting impatient with it for not blooming! So, that helped. I am going to root-prune it this year.

It also reminded me of an ancient myth in India. It is said that a particular garden tree called Ashoka would bloom in spring only after being kicked by a beautiful woman!

Dirty hands and good food...
by: John

Greetings Doug...

I have, so far, enjoyed your newsletters and look forward to seeing more of them. I live near Oscoda, Michigan and it's nice to hear from someone who has to deal with the weather anomolies in the cold climates of our northern areas. Most of the other similar sites/people tend to be in much warmer areas and, while I still read their material, it has to be modified to adjust to our weather and shorter growing season.

I am a life long gardener, having started in the 50's as a lad on our farm. One of my first jobs there (at around age 4) was working (pulling weeds--yuk) in our cash crop gardens. We had a veggie garden of about 2 acre where we grew assorted veggies, and another area of about 2 acres that we alternated with sweet corn 1 year and potatoes the next. I remember, after I got to about age 8, during the harvest season my younger sister and I would rise at daybreak, pack up PB&J sandwiches, and load a hay wagon with fresh picked veggies and pull it with an old John Deere LA (thats the little baby one) about 2 miles to the main highway and spend the entire day there selling veggies on the roadside and taking orders for the next day. This is unheard of today, of course, with the demise of the morality of todays peoples and the chance of being robbed or worse.

For the last several years I lived in Oscoda to be closer to my employment (carpenter/builder). I lived in an apartment downtown, overlooking US 23 where I was the talk of the town with my balcony garden. In an area of 10'x10' I grew sweet corn, 2-3 varieties of tomatoes, beans, peas, carrots, beets and more along with flowers as well; all in container beds that I had built to suit. In this small area, I was able to grow an unbeleivable amount of food and actually was able to give some away to my neighbors there in the apartment complex.

With the recent economy and the total downfall of the home building trades here in Michigan, earlier this year I decided to to take my early retirement and moved out into the country. While I missed the season this year, I look forward with enthusiasim to next years. I will finally be back plying the soil and doing what I love and have missed so much for the last years.

Keep on growing........ John

life is short....enjoy it today..!!

WORMS
by: Bev in BC

Why are there very few gardening sites who talk about worms? They are the best friend your garden could have! Their casting (manure) is so rich, plants and seedling thrive in it. Worms help compost the dead roots etc in your garden. The only eat microbes that are present in rotting vegetation. They do not eat plants or bulbs unless the microbes have reduced it to mush. Don't be wary or afraid of them do some reading to understand what a prize they really are. You won't be sorry.

I LOVE YOUR NEWSLETTER!

Need your help:
by: Diane Klein

Dear Doug ,

I found your site because I was struggling to get info on my asparagus plant.
I looked all over the Net....

Never did get your answer or see it on your site.

The plant is growing (I even sent you pictures) for about 2-3 years now.
But no spears. I've cut it back but probably at the wrong time of year.

Can you give me some asparagus plant tips? I love the stuff and want to plant more but I want to handle it correctly.

Thanks, Diane

I am pretty new to subscribing to your newsletter but so far have enjoyed every bit of it. The gardening tips are great and the writing style as someone else commented on, is a pleasure to read! Written with style! Written to the point! I am also in zone 3a (as is another "commentor") and appreciate any information relating to this zone - especially here out on the prairies - Strathmore, Alberta (near Calgary). Thanks again Doug.

Zone 1b from Pink Mountain
by: Colleen

I live at mile 132 on the Alaska Hwy in a very tough growing climate. Zone 1b. By creating micro-climates I can grow some zone 3 plants. This year has been particular frustrating because it has been so cold and up to a couple of weeks ago very dry. I really find the newsletter  very helpful and interesting.  Anything on cold climate gardening is of particular interest.

by: Larry

Hi I live in missouri U.S.A. I have raised bed gardens,,I don't have a well,,so I carry my house water from different places,,I catch rain water for my garden and my critters.
I also use my gray water to water my gardens and to make manure tea out of rabbit and pigeon droppings.
I can't always count on rain.
I like what little I have read on your site,, THIS WINTER i will spend more time exploring it.

Great stuff to read and increase my knowledge but for me, too much at one time. Keep it coming.

I absolutely adore your writing style. The bluntness (eg. plant thugs) and the humour it evokes gives strength to your descriptions. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

A truly lovely site
by: Diane McMullen

Have not been using the site long and posed a question and was thrilled to see it was answere straight away, thanks Doug. I find it brilliant to see so many places catered for - me I am in England so very different climate to most the the users but still interesting. Thanks a million Doug.

Good tips!
by: Tom Maier

I learned something from Doug Green right off the bat--to peel off the fiber top of purchased potted plants so the exposed top doesn't act as a wick--drying out the roots (why didn't I think of that?)

corn gluten?

Someone mentioned corn gluten. What is it? I just signed up. I know almost nothing about prganic gardening. Bought a house in Northwest Oregon and am landscaping from nothing but grass.

Thank you for your wonderful newsletters and all the infomation on your website. The only thing that disappoints me is that your information seems to be shared by mostly people in the United States in warmer climates than on the Prairies in Canada. Could you add any comments and information about gardening in zone 2b and zone 3 ?

Love it!
by: gunslingerswife

Your newsletter is helping me, a novice gardener, learn more about the basics, as well as more involved horticultural concepts. Your newsletter/site is a great resource for gardeners of any level.

trial and error
by: gayle

Thank you so much for this newsletter. All of my gardening has been by trial and error. Now I have a place to pose a question or two. I'm so interested in what vegetables to plant near other vegetables and what not to plant near each other. I don't have much time but what I have read is fascinating.

Wow! Thanks!
by: Jesi B

How nice! All this free information! Readily available! Your site is like a truck load of presents---help yourself! Thank you, Mr. Doug! I have recently found your site, and didn't need to look farther for the info that I needed. It's all well planned and laid out in an easy composittion, so whatever the subject is, it is easy to find. It's plain to see you work as diligently on the quality of this site, as you do on gardening. It's so nice to have all YOUR years of hard work at our fingertips! Many blessings to YOU too.

Most Comprehensive
by: TK

I can't believe I haven't found this website before! It is the most comprehensive gardening information I've seen. I have yet to find a topic that hasn't been covered. I had hoped Doug was single but alas. Hard to find men who are into gardening and dogs! I love being able to just "pop" in and find information. I've forwarded your website to several of my gardening friends. Thank you.

I'm enjoying all the information that you pass along, Doug. I like growing veggies and flowers all together, mostly in our front yard, here in Carpinteria, CA. Your words of wisdom are encouraging and informative, since I'm a real student of wise, organic gardening.
have peace, joe sevilla

Your newsletter is a "gift"
by: Cathy Cook

We've all become a little jaded, I think, when it comes to 'free' communications, especially those offered online. Finding your newsletter, though, Doug, has restored my faith that there ARE still good, knowledgeable people interested in simply sharing their knowledge and talents to build a better world. I don't have nearly as much time as I would like to commit to gardening, but just glancing through your resources helps keep me motivated to do what I can. THANK YOU and bless you ~~

newsletter
by: Linda B

I love getting your newsletters. Even though I am in the deep south I learn something all the time about my gardening habits. Keep the info coming.

A Huge Help
by: Sandy

You've been a huge help in getting me started in organic gardening. I applied gobs of compost and top soil last fall and spread corn gluten this spring. My yard is 100% better already. The dandelions are vanishing! Woohoo!! My flower beds and vegetable garden are so healthy now that I've used your methods. I am constantly digging thru your info as I am really into gardening now that I can see great results.
I couldn't have done it without your help. I am amending my clay, making compost and compost tea, spreading coffee grounds and an thinking serious about a worm bin. I am studying companion planting and thinking about using rain barrels for free water. You've made gardening so exciting! I love every minute working in my yard and garden, even if I am using the Armstrong method! Thanks for all your help and e-books. I couldn't do it without you! Wouldn't want to!

Just a note to let you know that I am enjoying your weekly newsletters. Though I am just a beginner with garden, I have learned a lot from your website with the help of pictures and comments. I'm hoping this year to have a beautiful garden that I have always dreamed about. Thanks again.

FAITHFUL READER
by: Anonymous

I have memories of being a toddler in my mother’s garden and I have my grandchildren playing in my gardens now. So I consider myself to be knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions and help others who claim not to have a green thumb. I was searching the web one day to help out a friend and I stumbled on your website and have been back almost on a daily basis. I look forward to receiving your newsletter because you are very informative and have original ideas. Your newsletter helps the one plant gardener and the more experienced planter through the entire year not just during the growing season. Thank you.

Hooray, it is Thursday!

P.S. The photography is also wonderful.

COMMENTS ON NEWSLETTER
by: R. rusty Avery

Hi Doug, well I haven't done too well using your site.. some of the links take me to shopping sites and that is not what I am looking for..I haven't had the time to really check into your garden of information yet but will sit down and take one topic at a time.. I do have one question..Is a caterpillar an insect or is it in a topic of its own? thanks for the answer..

Thank You!
by: Debbie Fickenscher

I love the Doug Green newsletter.
and I have a question. I live in A suburb of Denver, CO with clay, expansive soil. and as much as I feed and care for my yard, it is lumpy. Do worms cause that? I would live a smooth, emerald green yard. Any help? Thanks!

Newsletters
by: KRG_Peterborough On

Great information. By far the best gardening newsletter I have ever experienced. I like your sense of humour and stating the facts in a light hearted manner. Many thanks. If more people were like you and freely shared their knowledge it would be a better, happier world.

Thank You for all your work
by: Gramma Pam

Computers aren't that different from gardening. We work on them, expect things from them, generally they make us very happy, sometimes we goof up and learn from it, sometimes we goof up and don't. I'm glad for all the knowledge and sharing of information I can get.

Messed Up Computers... sigh
by: Doug

OK - so I used to have several hundred comments here - but I accidentally garbaged them all when I made some changes to the system. Sigh. I should stick to answering gardening questions and writing instead of doing server-side work. :-)
