Help - Violets Taking Over

How do I get rid of pesky violets that have just taken over my garden and are in the lawn and EVERYWHERE!!!!
I've tried digging them up by the roots and they come back twice as bad!!!

Doug says welcome to lawn hell. Here's the deal. You have to increase the health of your lawn - getting it very thick and lush. You do that by overseeding in the fall and by mowing as tall as you can. And you keep digging out the offending plants (they self sow like mad by the way)

Corn gluten in the spring will stop the majority of young seeds from establishing - the mother plants will slowly die out.

The thicker lawn will fight them off and taller mowing allows the grass to shade out some of the foliage but the bad news is that the viola will act as a mini-climber and climb up the grass blades.

I confess I hate this plant for this reason (one of the few plants I won't allow in my garden)

Here are the instructions for a healthy lawn

guineas love violets
by: TJ

Guinea Fowl love my violets, in one season they have shrunk my violet patch in half, they would have done more but I like the violets so I try to keep the birds off them. If you have room for guineas they are also great for bug, rodent and snake control. The only drawback I have found is it's hard to keep lettuce with them around.

Getting rid of violets
by: Carolyn

I think you're stuck with all the methods people use to get rid of weeds and invasive:
Round-Up
Salt water
Manual yanking
Ripping out the entire lawn and resodding
Blow torch : )
Toxic weed-killers : (

JJ's or Violets
by: Kathy

I'm talking about violets with the heart-shaped leaves not the Johnny jump ups that look like tiny pansies. I have violets in colors of pink, white, and blue and they are extremely invasive and spreading to my lawn. I think I have my work cut out for me in trying to get rid of them. Any suggestions?

Carolyn - thanks for the comment - you're right, i"m talking about Viola cornuta (the Johnny-jump-up) that spreads like wildfire. The bigger Viola are not as invasive and can be controlled (for the most part) much more easily.

Violets/violas

I'm not clear from this posting whether you guys are talking about violets or Johnny-jump-ups and their ilk. Although related, they have different appearance and behaviors. I've never seen violets take over a lawn but Johnny-jump-ups will take over the universe if not restricted! And while JJs are easy to tug out, violets take some work.
