Growing Goat's Beard

I live in Illinois & am interested in harvesting Goat's Beard seed head "pouf!s" (or clocks, as the Brits say.)
I would not classify myself as a gardener, so please speak in small words & large letters.
I have one that... de-poufed itself & was wondering if I could just plant the seeds.. or if I'd have to wait a really long time for them to sprout. What is the cycle?

Doug says this looks rather like the seed pod of Goat's Beard (Tragopogon dubius) a common weed rather than Goatsbeard (Aruncus doicus) the garden plant. No problem growing it - put it in the garden and you'll have lots next year. Mind you, I have no idea why you'd want to do this. :-)
