How To Grow Galtonia Candicans

Galtonia candicans is a South African native that likes a warm, well-drained soil. I've grown this more or less successfully in my garden and while it does tend to peter out if not happy, it gives a wonderful fragrance to its surroundings while in bloom. (and makes it worthwhile to continue trying to grow it).

It does tend to look like an elongated hyacinth which shouldn't come as a surprise given it is a member of the lily family of plants. I came to fall in love with each of those nodding white flower bells along the stem.

  • Flower colour: white
  • Bloom time: July - August
  • Height: 30 inches
  • Planting depth to base of bulbs: 5 inches
  • Space between bulbs: 5-7 inches
  • Light: full sun to very light shade

  • Excessive water, either a damp year or an enthusiastic watering system will displease this bulb and it will be short-lived under these regimes. Spring watering will keep it healthy.

I only fed it with compost in the very early spring and it never saw anything else.
