Which fertilizer is best
Doug says
Well, I believe that compost is the single best thing you can do for your garden. It feeds the soil and the soil in turn feeds the plants. This is how plants work - and how great gardens over the years have survived and continued to produce bumper crops of flowers and edibles.
The single best answer though is from a gardening book written in the late 1800's for commercial market gardeners. And I quote.
"These special fertilizers for special crops are gradually increasing in number, so that some dealers now offer fifty kinds, different brands being offered for plants belonging to the same family. There is an ignorant assumption in this, and any cultivator of ordinary intelligence cannot fail to see that the motive in so doing is to strike as broad a swath as possible, so that a larger number of customers may be reached and a higher price obtained."

It's all about marketing. Go with compost. Here's Peter Henderson again.
“These hair splitting distinctions are not recognized to be of any value by one practical farmer or gardener in a hundred; for a little experience soon shows that pure bone dust or well rotted stable manure answers for all crops nearly alike, no matter what they are." Peter Henderson
