Fertilizer for tomatoes in container

What fertilizer and how much is best to use to feed tomatoes in containers on "every three days program" (5 gallons container).

Doug says that I use fish emulsion on mine. Feeding once a week with full strength or half strength twice a week. Works fine.

compost tea
by: Doug

Folks - we no longer use a manure tea - the old way of brewing this product produced a lot of e-coli and negative by-products we don't want in our gardens. We use aerated compost tea now - recent research has shown that if we produce compost without manure, there is no e-coli problem. And aerating the compost tea while it is being produced eliminates the production of anaerobic bacteria that we really want to avoid.

So while a lot of old-time gardeners used manure and made tea from it (I was one of them) research shows that home gardeners don't need it nor should they use it.

Manure by any other name is fertilizer

Manure(s) and Manure Tea are all fine organic fertilizers as is fish emulsion (none smell too good)I speak from experience with Bovine and equine manure and goat manure mixed with sawdust. Best set out to compost and add a bit of lime to control ph. Currently I use chicken and rabbit manure. Rabbit manure is the only one safe to apply directly to plants or soils without risk of burning the plants.

good fertilizer

We have horses and I have found that the manure-woodshavings we remove daily from stalls helps grow huge tomatoes, squash, watermelons and pumpkins. In the fall I dump about 8 wheelbarrow loads in the garden area, till it in and let it set til spring- re-till the area and plant. We gave away hundreds of tomatoes, etc. last season.

I like to use some composted chicken manure tea. The tomatoes just seem to smile when they get it.
