Dividing Lavender

by Cynthia
(Centerville, Ohio)

I have a very large bed to fill and was wondering if I can divide lavender? I planted a lot of it last year and now I have about 10 very large "clumps". If I can divide--how and when? I enjoy your newsletter and can't believe how much I have learned!! Thank you for doing it!

Doug says that lavender can't be divided. It's a woody shrub and is propagated by softwood tip-cuttings or by seed. You might also try layering to get it to throw a new shoot with roots. But don't dig it up and try to divide that woody root and stem.

Lovin' Lavender

Could not grow lavender in Indiana (Lawrenceburg, In), but recently moved to Lexington, SC where it is growing beautifully in the sandy soil. My question is, do you trim it back now(the old bloom stems are still on it), or just let it go?

Problems with Lavender
by: Gail

I live in Zone 5, Northwest Indiana and planted Lavender on the south side of my house with full sun, and it took off the first year. Next year I planted another and it is maintaining, but not thriving. Then after about 3 yrs the original Lavender never came back??? Is it too cold in my zone, or is there a secret to maintaining Lavender...I love Lavender!!

If a plant self-layers (a shoot roots) then you can divide this off the mother plant. But if that plant has been growing for one or perhaps two years with no layering, it isn't going to divide. So what you're taking off the plant are rooted-layers - not dividing the roots.
