Q&A My Datura Is Not Flowering.

Thanks for the subscription to the newsletter.  I already have a question for you.  I planted a Datura this spring and it only had one blossom.  I have planted several over the years and they have all been very prolific bloomers.  This new one is approximately 4 and 1/.2 feet wide and about 4 feet tall.  I have fertilized and the plants look very healthy.  What could be the problem?  Thanks

You don't say which plant you've put in the ground.  Generally speaking, the plants that used to be classed as Datura are fast bloomers.  Quick off the mark and blooming heavily even up in USDA zone 4.  The Brugmansia tended to be more warmth and sun loving requiring more sunlight to bloom.

I found this in my own gardens (others may disagree I note) and particularly when I planted the taller "tree-like" ones - they were much slower to bloom - often I had to overwinter them in large pots before they'd spring into glorious flower.

Also, if you're feeding your garden well - too high nitrogen counts, you'll find the plant will grow massively but with fewer blooms.  Get rid of the artificial nitrogen and only use compost and you'll see a huge difference in flower production (in almost all perennials I note).
