Damping off

I cant afford to buy heat mats to start my seedlings, I have lights and a fan but I am having trouble with my plants dying from damping off . Doug is there anything I can do to stop this with out getting heat mats? I want to thank you very much for being there for people . Your friend in gardening

Doug says that rotting seedlings are because of overcrowding, too cold soils and lack of ventilation. So solve those problems and it will go away. Is there a magic formula that will let you break Mother Nature's rules on this? :-( Sorry, but I don't make the rules, I only try to figure them out and pass them along. Solve those issues and your seedlings will be fine - break those rules and nothing I can tell you is going to make them better.

Light bulbs instead of heat mat
by: June

If you can situate your seedlings so that they are over some other heat source, the top of an older refridgerator, or on a chair over a heat duct, or over an incandescent light bulb, that should do it. You can use different wattage bulbs to help control the heat. It is the temp of the soil, not the temp of the air that you are trying to get right. Also, you might have better luck with warm roots but a cooler location otherwise. Remember that electricity and water don't mix, that you shouldn't leave the lights on at night, (or use a lower wattage bulb at night) and use a thermometer to check the temp of the soil. Also, different types of plants prefer different soil temps.
