Cutting Back my Rose Bushes in January

by Gabrielle
(Seattle)

Doug,
Happy New Year!
I haven't cut any of my 3 rose bushes back yet. Is it too late? How should I handle this? The rose bushes are 40 years old and I would hate to kill them....especially since they aren't mine (I rent my house from a friend).

Thank you in advance for the info. You're the BEST!

Doug says that if the roses are dormant, then you can cut them back at just about any time before they start to bud out again. No biggie - this is January so just head on out to the garden (Seattle isn't drop dead cold like Canada) and do some pruning.

Roses are very tough and can grow out of most pruning mistakes over 1 or 2 growing seasons w/good pruning. Pruning has some fundamentals but is not an exact science and any good nursery will have pamphlets and books to guide you.

If you can dig in your soil and the plant is dormant, then you can move a plant. But if you can dig in January in Chicago, it's not the Chicago I know. :-)

Roses and Celmatis

Hey Doug
I have a clematis growing in my rose bush. Can I move it now when I trim back the rose bush?
