Compost Starter

Compost starter or compost activator products are being sold on the Internet and in my humble (or not so humble opinion) these are mostly a waste of money.

Here's Why They Waste Money.

The trick (if there is one) to getting your compost “working” is to have the right proportion of nitrogen materials (green) to cellulose materials (brown). Once this happens and the pile is at the right moisture content, compost will happen whether you want it to or not. And unless you have these two factors correct, composting will not happen no matter what you add to your production system.

Your own garden (if it has not been sprayed to heck and back) has a full range of bacteria and fungi living there that are acclimatized to your specific climate. If you live in the Northeast, you’ll have different proportions (and species) of garden micro-organisms than someone living in Florida. That’s how nature works.

In composting, you produce a range of bacteria and fungi that will work to benefit your garden soil and subsequently the plants in it. That’s why we compost.

Simple Cheap Option

If you want to get the proper range of bacteria and fungi for your garden, for your neighborhood, simply add a few shovels of garden soil from your own garden. This is the best compost starter or compost activator you can find.

If You've Been Spraying Heavily

If you've been spraying your garden quite heavily, then you may find that there isn't a full range of beneficial micro-organisms in your own garden.
The simplest thing to do is find a neighbor who gardens organically and get a shovel of their compost or garden soil. That will do the trick.

An excellent alternative to this is to purchase a bag of worm compost.

This product will work to add a full range of micro-organisms to compost piles. Regular bagged manures will contain some bacteria and fungi as well but would be second to worm compost (There are quite a few rumours of what feed lot cattle are fed in the way of growth hormones and chemicals and I prefer to not add those to my garden if I can avoid it)

If All Else Fails

And if all else fails, you can purchase a compost activator or compost starter package/
