Compost Spreader
Doug, what kind of compost spreader do I need for my lawn?
Doug says:
It really depends on the size of your lawn. :-)
On mine, I use the old-fashioned armstrong system. My strong-arm, shovel and wheelbarrow fling the stuff every which way and the job is done.
I confess that I don't ensure it's really even or distributed evenly. I find the first time I run over it with a lawn mower that anything that's sticking up gets "distributed" out the bottom of the mower pretty nicely.
Compost is too damp (usually) to use one of the smaller lawn grass seed or fertilizer spreaders. It will "bridge".
Bridging in Your Compost Spreader
In most spreaders, there is a little "gizmo" or blade at the bottom of the spreader and this revolves to keep the material loose and flowing into the discharge chute. When a material is too damp, the small blade or whirling arm cuts away at the bottom but the material will not drop properly. You get an open space at the bottom and everything packed in on top of this - this is "bridging".
And compost does it nicely so that the small spreaders don't really work reliably.
Bottom line. You get to use the armstrong method on normal lawns.
Unless you have more money than you need and a larger lawn that you need. In this case, a farm supply or lawn care store (a small company that sells lawn tractors not the box stores) will have access to a small compost spreader that can be towed behind the lawn tractor and that is designed to handle dampish material such as compost.
