Clematis Wilting

by June
(Dunrobin, ON Canada)

Last year I planted my first clematis. The buds progressed and bloomed, new buds formed, and the plant was looking very healthy. Then the buds and leaves went limp. I discovered that something had cut the plant off at ground level. Do you have any idea what this would be? Thanks Doug.

Doug says he has no idea what could have done this but if he was guessing, he'd go with chipmunks or rabbits.

With the cutting at the bottom, this is not clematis wilt folks.

Cut Clematis Fix
by: CdnErin

It might seem hopeless for your clematis for this, but if you can actually recover it somewhat!
Pull some of the plant down from the trellis then find some reasonably healthy shoots (those that are not completely wilted starting at a bud), soak it in water with a bit of Roost Boost for a week or two. Once you have some roots on the cuttings, you can plant them right back in their spot.
Also if there are any seed-puffs from last year, just bury them near the root ball or wherever you want them to grow.

You might also find next spring or even later this summer (if you keep watering where the root ball is) it will come back.
If it doesn't come back this summer, make sure to water it in well for the winter, and it should come back next spring.
Hope all this helps!

My husband used his new string trimmer and cut thru my Clematis. So if your spouse uses a trimmer, its probably his fault.....
luckily he didn't get it all, but it looks pretty sparce. I may have to plant more

It was either an animal or string trimmer accident.
