Manduca sp hornworm

This caterpillar is a one of the Sphinx moth family probably Manduca rustica the Rustic sphinx. When caterpillars are about to pupate they get dark and look a little different in color and form than one feeding on a plant...so it is hard to know for sure. So, it is probably ready to pupate. They burrow into soil to pupate.

These caterpillars are found in the southern US thru Mexico and into tropical America. They feed on deciduous trees, shrubs and vines such as Bignonia and Fringe-tree.
