Bright Red Beetle

by Shirley
(Montreal, Quebec)

This beetle is bright red and thin. He (or she) is mostly found on my daylillies. I had thought they were called Japaese beetles but have since found out they are not. They eat all the leaves off the daylillies (not all kinds) they do not eat my red daylillie that each flower only lasts a day. (Cardboard texture flower). Their larvae sits in its own waste. If the larvae goes unattended, the plant looks like a tree after a forest fire it just leaves a stick there. The red beetles are usually found 2 per leaf and we just pick them up and squish them but are wondering if there is a way to kill them otherwise.

Doug says that this sounds very much like the Red Lily Beetle. (picture here on this link)
