Bleeding Heart Propagation

Hello,
Is it possible to take a cutting from a Bleeding Heart bush, and how would I do it to get to grow successfully?

Do you recommend doing this?

Thanks in advance.
Beth

Doug says that division is far away the easiest way to propagate this plant. Take divisions in the very early spring just before or *just* after it starts growing.

But yes, tender shoot cuttings do root up if you create the proper conditions (warmth!) but not usually in a glass of water kind of thing. I tried a few when I had my nursery but it was too variable for me with D. spectabilis (old fashioned bleeding heart) and not economic to do. Follow *all* the directions for tender cuttings and you might get some to root up for you. (Use about a 4 inch cutting of the new growth)

Good luck!

Yes, bleeding heart divide very well. I was surprized how woody they are below ground. They seed well too. I potted up a few for the Hort. sale last year but did not make the market early enough. I'll take them Saturday as they overwintered in the plastic pots. Hurray!

Additionally, old fashioned bleeding hearts (red and white) will self seed. Look under the branches for young plants as the parent is dying down for the summer (here, this is early to mid-June). I think these seedlings come from the previous year's seeds, as seeds haven't necessarily dropped yet at that point.
