strange "growth" of ice

Bizarre scupture in my birdbath that no one has yet explained. It is hollow in the middle and crystalline on the sides. Anyone have any physics background to explain this?

I have no real answer, but sometimes particles (like algae or leaves) in the water cause ice to create odd shapes.
It's a cool thing, so to speak!
