better tasting tomatoes

What do I need to put in the soil ? My tomatoes were pretty last year but kind of bitter.

Doug says the deal with tomatoes is to grow them stress-free. The more you stress them, the poorer the fruit is going to be. So - having said that, you need to make sure they get all the nutrition they want - I use compost in the spring (a shovel a plant) compost tea every month or so through the summer and fish emulsion (once a month or so) to keep things growing nicely. I also make sure they never suffer from water shortages. Those are the easiest two things you can do in order to get better-tasting tomatoes.

Then the fun thing is to decide just which variety you like. And here *everybody* has their own opinion. Hint - what does well in your region isn't going to be the better plant in other regions necessarily. :-) And your taste buds are different. Sweet Tomatoes

It is pretty basic. Good nutrition in the soil. You can buy all the bags of promises you want in the garden center, but nothing replaces good ole manure. Go to a stable and choose a horse stall where the droppings are aged and dry. I mix it right into the soil -PRE planting- while tilling the ground. Extra can be added in the furrows during the growing season. Horses, unlike cattle, process the grass seed so you are not as likely to introduce those pesky weeds. ( avoid picking up fresh hay mixed in as there is grass seed in there!)

For the best garden ever, fence your garden area and keep a pig in the garden space. It will be your most prosperous garden ever, and pig manure is the cleanest of all. And while rooting, they kill existing weeds and churn the great nutrition right into the soil.. For those with a small yard, this is a great excuse for a potbelly pig!

Sugar is old wive's tale

An old wives' tale. Sorry but no basis in fact. Having said that - if you like doing it, it's your garden. :-)

Sweeter tomato
by: Sandy

A friend of mine introduced me to a sweeter tomato. While eating a slice of hers I accused her of putting sugar on it and she said, "No, all I do is put 1 tsp of sugar in the hole before I put the tomato plant in". So,I've been using that trick every year and am very pleased with the good tasting tomatoes I get.
