Banana Tree

by Bunnie
(Berlin, MD)

I have new shoots coming from my banana tree. It is planted in a large pot. The new shoots are not attached at the stalk. (it doesn't look like it anyway) How can I cut this and start another tree. Thank you for your time

Doug says that hardy banana (or tropical) throw "pups" from the roots at the base of the plant and that's what you're seeing.

Just dig them up, cutting them off the roots with something sharp (shovel works) :-) Repot and you have new banana trees. Pretty simple division.

You need to make sure the pup is at least 12" tall. That way you know it has some roots!

When you make the cut, make sure you take a piece of the mother plant.

Make the cut, but don't sever it all the way for a week!
Good luck!
