bad bad robins

my question is this, ive started seeds in a starter tray for my veggie garden.ive been having problems with mud and seeds being missing. i caught the culprit which is a robin taking the mud to build a nest, ive put a fence type over the trays but she just climbs underneath and gets the mud and seed. what can i do to deter them from doing this?? help please

Doug says make the fence tighter and more secure. :-) You've put out ideal robin building material (I used to have one prune and clean out my water garden plant pots every spring) and they're going to keep coming until they either can't get in or have the nest built.

The other option is to fence in your seeds and then provide muddy nest building material right beside the seeds so they don't have to rob you - you're giving it to them. :-)

Robin

We have birds of all kind and one Robin that thinks he owns the place. lol I too had this problem so I have put up shepards hooks bought bird feeders to hang on them for my feathered friends. I have my feeders far away from my garden. In fact they are hidden from one another. I fenced my garden in with chicken wire to keep the rabbits out and put up childrens wind spinners inside my garden to confuse the birds. I rotate the spinners every third day as birds can get use to anything if it is left in the same place all the time. I also went to the bait shop and bought worms to put in my flower garden and also scattered them around the yard. Robins perfer worms to seeds at all times. By the way the chicken wire is just tall enough that you can step over it and just tall enough to keep the rabbits out. I hope this helps and good luck. :-)

birds are great but...

...when you work hard to enjoy a lovely veggie garden, its very disheartening to watch animals ruin everything youve tried to do. I grow my garden to EAT it myself, not for the rodents and birds to feast on. Its hard to sit back and "enjoy" after all my hard work went down the drain! SueZ

thankyou for your coments. i do have compassion for them , i even tried puting up a basket for the pair who were desperatley trying to make a nest on my porch light to no avail. ive had to change my fencing into screens in order to keep them out even though i put a huge pot of mud out for them and nesting material. i love birds but i also love to eat. my garden is for eating. thakyou for all your help. gb..
