Ajuga propagating in container

I have Ajuga growing in a pot with other things. It now has long trailers and I have snipped most of them off. I want to transplant the trailers into the ground. On the underside of each section there is a clump. Should I put it directly onto the soil or would it be better to put it into a pot of water and let it root a little first. Thanks for your help.
Doug says the easiest way to do this is to allow the trailer to touch the soil (put it into another pot while still attached to the mother plant or allow it to touch the soil) It will root up in this smaller pot and you can then cut it off and transplant it easily.
Putting it into a glass of water "might" work- I've never tried doing this.
Putting it directly into the soil won't work if you don't keep it shaded and constantly moist - this isn't normally done. This is assuming there are absolutely no roots on the baby plant. Keeping it shaded and constantly moist-soil "might' allow it to root if the temperatures are warm (cool temps won't root)
If it were mine, I'd be propping up a small pot and putting the plant on top of it to root into that pot - then cutting it off and transplanting it.
But given I don't allow this spreading thug into my garden, I think keeping it in a container garden is the single best place for it. :-)
