A Useless Fence

Cherish the Moment

Cherish the Moment

The horse is long gone but I keep propping up the posts waiting for a moment like this. To me it looks Robert Frostish, or J R Lowell: "stiff rails softend to swan's-down". Taken in 2004, it will soon be one of those things that aren't anymore.

Whose Woods Are These?

Whose woods are these?
I think I know...
His house is in the village, though.

And isn't this a lovely photo?

beautiful useless fence

"the stiff rail softened to Swansdown, And still fluttered down the snow" has long been a favorite verse, especially in Michigan, where snow is no stranger. Your useless fence looks much like ours, which is part of a split-rail fence that used to enclose a hugh farm back in the 1880s that predated our little subdivision. Thanks for sharing. It is just beautiful.

Thank you to Penny and Moni

A new fence would not be as nostalgic as this one. My 13 year old daughter and her 7and 8 year old apprentices dug the holes through very rocky ground to put it up, only to discover Rebel was a houdini. The rails went down like toothpicks until an electric wire was added.

Recently, much to my surprise and delight, another fence put up to keep our new kittens off the road, provided space on BOTH sides! for flowerbeds!!

Not useless

Your fence isn't useless if it provides beauty! My horses are gone too, but I've left the riding ring fence just because I like to see it set against the pine trees. It's also a nice reminder of the days when we did ride.

Worth taking a moment

It is such a nice view. I am glad you took the time to prop up the fence so you had the photo.
Perhaps a new fence will provide a view like that for a long time to come! And forget the horse...put in a perennial garden!
