Weird Little BLUE Bug

Weird Little BLUE Bug

This looks exactly like those little grey bugs found under flower pots that roll up in a ball when they see you, except this one is bright blue.

I was washing birdcages with the hose when I spotted this guy on the edging. It happened last month (Sept) and I live on Long Island, N.Y.

Blue, white and black insect (Banded alder borer)

I noticed this insect as it was struggling to manoeuvre through fairly long grass. In the pictures it is on a blackberry leaf but it fell there when I bumped it. Its body and head are about 1 1/2 inches long and the antennae are about the same length. It has 6 long legs - there appears to be wings but it never opened them. I found this insect in a 15 year old Douglas Fir plantation, so the area has lots of vegetation, trees, grass, bushes and all sorts of plants. I live in Campbell River British Columbia. I have seen insects like this one before but have been unable to identify them. The over powering feature about them aside from their fairly large size is the bright blue colour.
